The Story of Pine and Palm

Pine and Palm was born from the owner, Ibu’s, deep connection to Arugam Bay, a place where the rhythms of nature and the spirit of surfing harmonize effortlessly. Ibu’s journey began when he was young, when he first picked up a surfboard and began exploring the waves along Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. What began as a pastime soon turned into a passion that shaped his life.

The Vision

The vision for Pine and Palm was to create a space where the peaceful energy of nature, the excitement of surfing, and the sense of community come together in perfect harmony. With three boutique rooms and a vibrant dorm, Pine and Palm offers a serene escape for those looking to connect with nature and experience the true spirit of surf culture.

Ibu

Founder & Owner

Ibu grew up surfing with friends between school breaks. After high school, he moved to Colombo to work in tourism and the airline industry, learning English and Singhalese along the way. In 2014, he returned to Arugam Bay to open a surf shop. Passionate about sharing surf culture and connecting with people from around the world, Ibu started Banana Surf Camp in 2021 and Pine & Palm in 2025.

Amy

Co-Owner

Amy, from North Carolina, USA, is Ibu’s partner in life and behind-the-scenes teammate. Mostly based outside Sri Lanka, she manages bookings, website development, and big-picture ideas for the surf shop and hotel. She looks forward to spending more seasons in Arugam Bay to share the waves and culture in person.

Nawas

You’re almost guaranteed to see Nawas during your stay at Pine and Palm. Nawas is a Pottuvil-native, growing up just outside of Arugam Bay. He worked abroad for several years before returning home to Sri Lanka and growing his family. Nawas now has 3 beautiful children and is here to help you throughout your stay.

Julia and Alex (Behind the camera)

Yoga Instructor and Photographer

Julia and her husband, Alex, are world travelers originally from Russia. They now travel to Arugam Bay each season to share yoga expertise and Alex is an incredible photographer. We highly recommend a yoga session with Julia during your stay and a photography session with Alex.
